2004 - Something More

"That terrible day called January 2nd," as is said in the story of Noel, our favorite Christmas cartoon.

This picture reminds me of one of your favorite Junie B. Jones books by Barbara Park: Junie B., First Grader: Toothless Wonder

I went to California with Aunt Karen and Grammy to visit Andrew and Jonathan and to celebrate Aunt Karen's 48th Birthday. I love this picture of us upon my arrival back home to you
Just in time to celebrate your 8th birthday

Having a chat with Gram, 25 March 2004
Found a wonderful quote in one of my journals. We went in search of a particular book at the library. David McPhail's Edward in the Jungle "because I like adventuresome books." :)
Along those lines, in the midst of thoroughly enjoying every book of the “Magic Tree House” series, the author visited Morehead Planetarium at UNC Chapel Hill to announce a new exhibit and summer camp! OF course we went, and I just love this picture of the two of you!
March 2004 I love your smile in both of these pictures and the fort you created for yourself  :)

But I LOVE this one I took shortly afterward

I am so glad I took you to the Y yesterday, even though I didn't feel like going swimming. You are my joy and my inspiration to keep doing fun stuff even when I don't feel like it. Thank you. xo Mommy

4 pm July 6th 2004 "Mommy - when we get home, let's watch Fantasia 2000. That's the one with the flying whales." What a beautiful smile. An outward glowing of your bright, shiny  spirit!
Apparently we were driving to Connecticut at the time, because the next thing I wrote was: "4:18 gorgeous summer weather all they way to between exit 11 & 12 NJ. Blues skies, white clouds and then I saw this huge bank across the entire northern horizon."

And then...
The rest of the year started really flying by. September 2004

October 31, 2004

In November some of the family traveled to Alaska for Uncle Bob's 70th Birthday.  I wish... what DO I wish? Sometimes I wish Dave jumped on board with the idea in January when the seed was first planted. Instead, he was not at all interested and the entire year ended up being a huge turning point in our lives.

Christmas Morning, December 25, 2004

This is one proud young lady. Her Art project was chosen to be displayed at the State Employees Credit Union on Blue Ridge Road, right across the street from the NC Museum of Art. We went to visit both right around Christmas, December 2004. The perfect end for a year in which there were not only bright spots, but also dark, desperate choices made that only in hindsight can I see could have been handled differently. Yet, it ended up being the impetus needed for the change that had to come. Lies, confrontation, sadness, pain. It all needed to happen so we could begin the transformation and eventually, heal. Angst I still feel at times, but it is getting better because now I am finally strong enough to let go of fear. The entry I found in my journal for that year was this:
“Fear does strange things to people… makes them forget everything except how afraid they are.”
